HyperTerminal and Vista

Microsoft chose not to include HyperTerminal in the Vista operating system.  For most users it is probably no big deal and hasn’t been a problem for me up until now.  I am getting more involved in router configuration and run Windows Vista on my workstation at ClearPointe.  I did a quick search on the Internet and discovered that there are several free applications available for download to overcome Vista’s lack of HyperTerminal.  However, I also discovered that HyperTerminal can be ported from a computer running Windows XP.  Here are the steps:

  1. Map a drive between your Windows XP computer and your Windows Vista computer.
  2. On the Windows XP box, navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows NT and copy hypertrm.exe.
  3. Paste hypertrm.exe in the C:\Program Files\Windows NT directory on the Vista machine.
  4. Back on the Windows XP computer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32 and copy hypertrm.dll.
  5. Paste hypertrm.dll in the C:\Windows\System32 directory on the Vista box.

You now have HyperTerminal installed on your Windows Vista system!

A good substitute for Hyperterminal is AbsoluteTelnet from Celestial Software. Not only does it support telnet and serial connections as hyperterminal did, but it also supports SSH, which is a better security choice. It has a tabbed interface, advanced security, and is translated into seven languages!

I would suggest to use PuTTY.PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.

Great article because directly answers the question on hyperterminal.
The program was simply not included.
The program simply need to be copied from XP (.exe, .dll).

Comparisons to other programs no needed and not included. A+
Reason for the exclusion of hyperterminal from Vista? What difference does it make.

Thanks a lot for the tip.. I thought I became crazy as the private version of Hyperterminal are not free anymore.
I just had to create a shortcut on my desktop as Vista doesn’t include it in its accessories.

I use Hyperterminal for medical billing purposes. I have upgraded to laptops only and now have Vista which everyone now knows does not include Hyperterminal. I purchased from Hilgraeve only to find that although I am able to connect to Medicare I cannot transfer files. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am now stuck with more computers than I need-I had to keep 3 Desktops along with 3 laptops!! Thanks for any tips!

I have the same problem as Karen. Just noticed that Hilgraeve reports that there is known problem transmitting files to Medicare via Z modem using Vista. The company recommends using Y modem but Medicare M2 gateway does not seem to accept this. I will speak with EDI help desk tomorrow and report any progress [I have spent 1 hour with them on phone to no avail thus far]. I will also try the FTP process. My first attempt got through but my ID/passwprd was not accepted.

    update….
Medicare has not been able to solve the problem of a bug in Windows Vista for z modem transmissions. I have resorted to using desktop running XP. Transfer bstrans.dat to desktop computer and run its hyperterminal. No need to have PCAce32 on that machine. Transfer went smoothly. Is a pain in the neck.. but works for now.

One alternative that I have discovered is that GPNet (used for direct uploads from PC-Ace for Medicare Part B at least) allows file transfers via other protocols than ZModem — you can use XModem, YModem (batch) or Kermit. X and Kermit are much slower than Z, but Vista does not drop the line while using them, and I get a “Transfer COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY” with either one. This would be a good solution unless the file size is so large as to make the slower speed problematic.

I have MotoSat satellite (Feb. ‘08) for my tv in our Motorhome (full time trav). Whenever Dish decides to make sat. changes, I’m saddled with the task of downloading M/S updates by way of hypertrm. I have their cord (9 pin for my XP and 15 pin on their controller). My XP power connection (2nd time) is wearing out and with Vista, our new machine, no serial port, no hypertrmal. I note from above the method of cut and paste. If I do that, is there ANYTHING else that is needed; in other words, if I do the above “patch”, I can do my M/S downloading with Vista, just as I would with XP, am I understanding that correctly? thank you

Mike, I did not have to do anything other than what I described in the original post; however, I primarily use Hyperterminal when performing the initial configuration of a router or switch. I have not tried to download Microsoft updates via hyperterm but, since you have had success on an XP machine, I would suspect that it would work just fine in Vista. Let us know how it works out for you!
